Biblical Reflections: James 1:12

James 1:12 – Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Life. It is an amazing and inexplicable phenomenon. On Earth, we experience life on multiple levels. We know physical life with every beat of our hearts. We see life in the flowers and herbs of the field. We might even sense it in the blowing wind that carries the aromas of Spring.

Eternal life as defined by the Bible has an altogether greater and very different quality. This fact was always true. In the beginning, the Bible tells us that Adam and Eve could enjoy all the fruits of the Garden save the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. This knowledge was too much for them. However the Tree of Life was not forbidden to them. In fact it was because of the presence of this latter tree that contributed to their ejection from the Garden by God lest they prolong their sinful existence with the fruit of this extraordinary tree. However, they did continue to live if only physically.

Jesus revealed in John 17:3 that eternal or everlasting life is dependent upon a relationship with God the Father and Jesus Christ. The link is the gift of faith as granted by the Holy Spirit. We begin the return to Paradise by holding the hand of God and walking with as dis Adam in the cool of the evening.

So perhaps there is more to life than what we see and hear. If we trust Jesus, life comes from godly love and faithfulness, and God exudes these qualities. You may wonder how you can love God since He is a Spirit. Thankfully Jesus made that very clear saying we love Him by loving others. Choose life and follow the Lord.
