Biblical Reflections: Proverbs 8:22

Proverbs 8:22 – The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

Time is a tricky thing. Mathematicians and physicists say that time and space are so intertwined as to be indistinguishable in terms of our understanding of things. For this reason, scientists refer to the measurement of outer space in units of lightyears instead of miles or kilometers. Distance and duration are essentially the same in absolute terms.

It makes sense if you think about it for minute or is that an inch or maybe a foot? Anyway, we measure our lives by time, but time is merely another part of the creation to God. God’s perspective, as much as we can understand it from the Bible, is eternal or everlasting. A thousand years are to God but a day, and a day like thousand years. How can this be? Well, remember it is about perspective.

The Bible teaches us that God knew and even possessed His people before any of His works, before the creation was ever spoken into existence. How? Because time is no limitation to Him. He does not age. You could say that God is ageless or rather outside of time. Instead of being infinitely old, God describes Himself as “I am that I am.” He simply exists.

Maybe it is because of His perspective that God’s ways are higher than our ways. Certainly , we are often very shortsighted, neglecting the big picture. Short term solutions lead us to a false sense of security. Trusting in our strength or our wealth for instance can be a great source of pain when these things fail. Instead let us trust in the One who has always been there even when we were not.

Instead let us trust in the One (who) has always been there even when we (were) not? Just a little confused at the wording. I like thinking of Him as without age, as simply existing. Time is just one of the ways that we are limited and bound as men and women. He is limited by nothing! We truely have an awesome God in which to place our trust!
