Biblical Reflections: Romans 7:21

Romans 7:21 – I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

We are at war. It is a war with ourselves. This conflict starts inside and manifests itself in our actions and the effect those actions have on those around us. Thankfully we are not left defenseless. We have weapons and armor.

God has granted believers a number of tools to aid His children defend and even attack the evil in their hearts and in their lives. We have the Truth of His Word and specifically the peace of the Good News of salvation of Jesus Christ to comfort us and defend us from the snares and lies of adversaries. Furthermore, the Righteousness of Christ guards us from utter condemnation. Paul emphasized the need for using the Faith granted by the Holy Spirit to shield us from the attacks of unbelievers.

The salvation of Christ protects us from loosing our heads in the face of the daunting daily warfare required to remain to the love of our lives. No better assurance could we have then knowing that Christ has already won the victory over death. We are concerned only with our daily struggle to abide close with Him. For this battle we have the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to cleave through the darkness of this world.

We need to understand too that these implements of spiritual warfare must be used in concert to be fully effective. For this reason, Paul wrote, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11).
