Psalm 37:27-29 – Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.
Doing good is probably the most prominent topic in the Bible. It was the failure of Adam and Eve to do the good God commanded that led to their exile. It was to admonish Israel to do good that He gave Moses the Law. It was following after goodness that they prospered when they obeyed Him. It was failure to pursue good that caused them to suffer again and again. Doing good is important even if being good is impossible in ourselves.
The goodness of God found ultimate expression in Jesus Christ. He is the Good Shepherd. He cares for His sheep such that He laid down His life for them. He did this not simply to save them from the punishment they have earned but to make way for the application of the Holy Spirit to conform them to His likeness and seal them to life eternal.
This is the good news of the Gospel. Jesus saved us not once but once and for all to be with Him and like Him. Like a caterpillar, we crawl around upon our bellies here in the world today, but the day will come when we will fly. Until then, our joy is found in drawing closer to our Savior by heeding His commands. To do otherwise is folly.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men , especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
We must run our race in purity and hope trusting in Jesus Christ the Righteous to lift us up. We will stumble. We may fall, but Jesus died to save. And save He will.
