Psalm 119:11 – Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
How do you avoid sin? It is a good question. Temptations are common, and our hearts are naturally prone to sin. “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one” (Psalm 14:2-3). What an indictment? What are we to do? “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?” (Proverbs 20:9)
Namely we are to trust in Him. Through prayer and meditation we can consult the Lord. We can speak to pastors and teachers in Church. However, nothing can replace reading and contemplating His word for ourselves. It nourishes and convicts. It encourages and chastens.
When we feel tempted, we should pray and seek the Truth of His Word for counsel. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9).
