Biblical Reflections: Romans 12:21

Romans 12:21 – Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Most of us have heard the saying, fight fire with fire. However, we do not see firefighters going into a burning house with flamethrowers. There is a place for a controlled burn occasionally, but these opportunities are rare in house fires. Instead water is the most plentiful and most common tool used to fight fire.

As the embodiment of the well of everlasting life, Jesus Christ is the fountain of living waters. He is the balm of Gilead, and His Spirit is the Comforter. His Word is the light and lamp to enlighten men. As the psalmist wrote, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103).

The choice then lies with us day to day to honor God and His Christ or let our baser nature rule us. The saints, those anointed by God with the Holy Spirit, can obey the Lord. We also know that we can disobey. We also know that we can consent to the sin of others or even join them in sin. Sometimes we simply turn a blind eye. How sad.

We must be vigilant to bring the Light of Christ to the dark places. Darkness cannot prevail where light penetrates. Indeed, darkness is the absence of light. “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” ( James 4:17).
