Biblical Reflections: John 6:35

John 6:35 – And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Have you ever been so hungry that you felt faint? Your hands shake and your mind feels dizzy. Your body is sending signals that you need sustenance. Only a dead man could ignore those signs. When we feel this way, we (the living) more urgently seek something to assuage our hunger and thirst. So too when out souls pants with weariness.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Only the spiritually dead do not hunger and thirst after righteousness. Without Jesus Christ, the living still stumble and fall not knowing the way to the well.

All we need to do is come to Him and believe.  It sounds so simple. However, even Christians fail to do so every day.  Think about it.  Each time we strike out on our own without prayer or considering God’s Word, we neglect the bread and water from God’s gracious unending supply. Speaking of Himself, Jesus said, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13-14). So bow your head, pick up a Bible, and eat, drink and indeed be merry!
