Proverbs 21:21 – He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.
Many people throughout the centuries drew a distinction between the God of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The notion has been that the God of the Old Testament was a vengeful Judge meting out punishment. While the God of the New Testament is full of mercy and compassion exemplified in Jesus Christ. I have even heard preachers say that God does not want your obedience but your love. How ridiculous! Did Jesus merely voice platitudes of love or was He crucified to obey the will of the Father? Obedience matters. Righteousness matters.
The simple and wonderful fact is that God is Holy. Holiness is not simple one of His characteristics. It is the cornerstone of His Person. God’s justice, mercy, love, and grace are all bound to His overwhelming holiness.
“The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works” (Psalm 145:17).
John call called the Savior, Jesus Christ the Righteous, and Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church. As followers of Christ we are called to holiness and righteousness through repentance, because we need to turn away from sin. Christ gave His life and sent the Holy Spirit to empower us to follow Him. To do otherwise is to reject life, righteousness, and honour. Reach for the abundant life and hold on. Honour awaits.
