John 14:16-17 – And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
It is hard to say goodbye. How much harder must it have been for the disciples of Christ to see their Master head to Calvary. We too feel alone at times, like no one understands us or really cares. Given our experience, it might be easy to give up. Only God does understand, and God does care for His children.
Jesus knew that the disciples would be scattered after the crucifixion out of fear and dismay. He also knew that His physical presence, great though it was for them, could not match the prompting and comfort given by the Spirit internally. By sending the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, into the hearts of believers, God can be wherever we are at all times and in all places. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit can accomplish what the Law could not. It can change the heart.
Few Scriptures can be more important for us to apply than 1 Thessalonians 5:19. Without the still small voice within us we can neither exercise faith nor enjoy the blessings of God’s Kingdom now or ever. Quench not the Spirit.
