Heavenly Affections – Colossians 3:2

Colossians 3:2 – Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

In our daily walk with Christ, it is critically important to keep the end in mind. Call it your heavenly goal. This heavenly goal encapsulates your hopes of holiness, glory, and the all-encompassing love of God. Countless faithful saints have come before whose lives have cleared the way. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

One of the greatest tools that we have as Christians is prayer. Prayer focuses our thoughts and settles our minds. Prayer affords us the opportunity to set aside sin, despair, and the trials of this world if only for a moment. The most amazing thing that prayer does is connect us with God. It allows mortal man to touch the immortal. It takes our eyes away from things on the earth to look to heavenly eternal glory. We should pray for understand of God’s Word. We should pray for mercy and the will to be merciful. We should pray for a hear to follow the Lord.

Akin to prayer is study of the Word of God. As we study the Bible in faith, we begin to understand God’s will and His holy character. The Bible illuminates our path and enlightens our eyes to our sin and the goodness of God. Jesus Christ as the ultimate manifestation of the Word is our helper and guide. As the Author and Finisher of our faith, He is source and aim of our lives. Therefore, Pray and study to achieve the abundant life promised by Christ in His spiritual kingdom. Set aside the weights of this world to run swiftly to the goal of eternal life. God’s children are destined to be like Christ (Romans 8:29). Therefore, do not delay, do not hesitate. Go to Him. Run to Him.
