2 Corinthians 1:21-22 – Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Oftentimes when we make a large purchase, we must provide an earnest payment. Not to be confused with a down payment, an earnest is a guarantee of a future claim. It keeps other pursuers from absconding with your property until full redemption.
The Apostle Paul boldly states that God (the Father) has laid claim to all His children through Christ’s sacrificial service. By grace we are saved not simply to an eternal life following release from this mortal world, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, each believer is given an enormous gift: faith. When we life by faith, trusting in God and His Word, we can enjoy the earnest of our ultimate inheritance now. Jesus said that He came that we might have an abundant life.
In His prayer in the garden on the eve of the crucifixion, Jesus acknowledged His Father’s work through Him that He should give eternal life to as many as the Father had given him. And Christ went on to define life eternal as relationship between the believer and “the only true God, and Jesus Christ” (John 17:2-3). As it has ever been, true life is dependant upon a relationship with God. All we must do is trust and obey. Let your faith have its work today.
