James 3:5-6 – Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Does your mouth ever get you in trouble? I have often let my speech get me in trouble. It has the power to mend and heal broken relationships and encourage others to greatness, but too often we let our tongues just blab out the first unthoughtful thing that comes to mind. When we fail to control our speech, we endanger ourselves and others.
James’ insights are great to help us recognize the danger of an uncontrolled tongue. Like a fire, it can burn bridges and homes to the ground. Instead, we should use our speech to enrich others through encouragement and enlightenment. By speaking the Truth in love, we can contribute to the work of Heaven, bringing the light of God to those in need. Be a light, speak the words of life!
