Matthew 22:37-39 – Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Do you want to be great? Everyone wants to appreciated. We naturally define ourselves by our accomplishments and experiences. When we have finished a long race or passed a difficult test or watched a child graduate college, we feel a sense that we matter. What we often find is that our greatest achievements involve helping others.
Jesus said, “…Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant” (Matthew 20:26-27). Jesus then defines greatness in terms of service and deference to others. Disciples of Christ should be well known for being helpful, gracious to others, rather than demanding subservience.
If Christ was humble, then we should be so as well. Take the opportunity today to help someone with less than you. We that are strong must lift up those in need (Romans 15:1).
