1 John 4:20-21 – If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
Let’s use a little logic to deduce some important facts revealed by the Apostle John…
God = Jesus Christ (John 10:30)
Jesus Christ = the Way, the Truth, the Life leading to heaven (John 14:6)
Life = Relationship with God (John 17:3)
God = Love (1 John 4:8)
Based on this simple review of just John’s writings, we see clearly that if we claim a relationship with Jesus Christ as our Savior, we must seek the way, the truth, and the life He demonstrated. This way/truth/life was one of divine mercy and sacrifice or in a word, love. Therefore, if we live by faith we are bound to love others as Christ.
Lest we think that John was alone in this revelation of the supremacy of love, we can see in Matthew 25:40 where Christ says, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Paul also ratified this notion with this encouragement, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour (Ephesians 5:1-2).
The simple fact is that we find hatred and blind discrimination easier than love. We may express love to our families or our friends, but we often fall short of the love of Christ. Pray to the Lord to give you a tender heart eager to show the love that He shows you everyday.
