Wisdom and Discipline – James 1:5-6

James 1:5-6 – If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

Foolishness is a terrible condition.  Like a disease it can impact everything we do and say.  Wisdom is the key to most every blessing.  By wisdom we will rise or fall socially and financially.  “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7).

Many people put great emphasis today on education as the secret sauce behind success.  While it is certainly true that we benefit from learning skills, history, and other things, what’s more important is discipline.  Discipline is what separates an educated fool from a wise man.

The followers of Christ are not merely students.  They are disciples.  Disciplined in the doctrines and life of Christ, true believers are disciples who want to be like Him and with Him.

In fact, even a cursory reading of Christ’s teachings leads us to the realization that nothing in this life is enjoyed without discipline.   Jesus makes His disciples free when they follow His teachings and not merely when they believe them (John 8:31-32).  Wisdom is ours for the asking, seek and you will find it.  Start looking now.
