Romans 12:11- Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Zeal is not a word commonly used today. Most people would say excited or dedicated or some other word to describe their desire to support or participate a cause. However, we lose an ability to property express ourselves when we forego using such words. Zeal captures our eagerness and passion together in a single term.
All the prophets, saints, disciples and apostles of the Bible share not only a relationship with the Lord but also a zeal for following Him. This zeal distinguished them and can distinguished us today. We do not need distinction for personal glory or gain. Rather our distinguishing characteristic should be a passionate desire to do the will of the Lord repenting of former unworthy things.
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:11-14).
