Two or Three – Matthew 18:20

Matthew 18:20 – For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

As He said in today’s verse, Jesus promised to dwell among His disciples.   Interestingly, He promised to be with them when they gather together.  While we know from the Bible in many places and hopefully from personal experiences that God is personal, Jesus highlighted that He would be with them as a group.  Why?

Jesus understood that the chief aim of life should be love for God and as a result love for others.  Love is the main Christian characteristic.  It defines our world view and dictates how we respond to daily challenges.   In fact, the Saviour said, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34-35).

Jesus called this a new commandment for His disciplines to love one another as He loved them.  It compliments and explains the meaning behind what He earlier defined as the two greatest commandments in the law: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).   Therefore, Jesus did not contradict the written law.  Rather He established it with His commandment that we show love based on His example and not another.

So when we come together as Christians in mutual love and appreciation, looking to Christ, we find Him dwelling among us in Spirit.  When we share His Word, we hear His voice.  When we help one another, we serve Him.  Isn’t that wonderful?!

Bless someone today with the Grace within you and know that Christ is with you.
