1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Years ago I heard a sermon where the minister illustrated our human condition as being like a runner running along the edge of a canyon. Too often we want to run close to the edge. Foolishly we want to endanger ourselves just to see what’s down in the bottom.
Most of the time we can see the way of escape from sin well before the point of no return. However, even under Grace, there are consequences for sin today. “When lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15). If we ignore the way of escape, we are headed for the cliff.
This situation reminds me of emergency escape ramps. These ramps are placed on the down side of highways in mountainous areas. Usually constructed of sand or gravel at an angle away from the roadway, these ramps are provided for drivers use in case their brakes fail or they are otherwise in risk of losing control. It is a way of escape. Only foolish drivers would ignore them.
In your day to day walk, you will be tempted. You will be tested. Our compassionate Father above has insured that we can escape. Don’t forget to look for the escape ramp and avoid the cliff.
