Proverbs 25:28 – He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Shakespeare once wrote, “Discretion is the better part of valor.” I wonder if he was thinking of this verse from Proverbs when he penned this line from Henry IV. Either way, this proverb speaks to one of those common sense notions that are not really so common.
The key ingredient to a life worth living is wisdom applied. In the words of King Solomon, “When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things” (Proverbs 2:10-12). From wince does This wisdom arise? God’s Word of course.
When we use discretion, we have a wall about us that defends us from foolishness and foolish men. When we use discretion, we honor our Lord and give Him the glory. When we have discretion, we follow the Truth and the Truth makes us free.
