1 Thessalonians 5:22 – Abstain from all appearance of evil.
How important is your reputation? I dare say that all your earthly success is tied to it. Your reputation is of utmost importance to you, your family, your church and any other group that associates with you. Even small pebbles make ripples in still water. Your life impacts those around you even, and maybe especially, when you are not looking.
God’s Word tells us, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1). We can recover wealth, but our names can be damaged forever. Choose a holy character over money every time.
The Apostle Paul warned us against licentiousness. Licentiousness is acting like we have permission to do things against the moral and ethical guidelines of God’s Word. While God’s children are indeed saved from sin’s curse by grace, this is not a license to sin. Furthermore, God tells us to avoid sin and the appearance of sin in order to maintain our holiness and not impede the holiness of others. Love others even when you think they are not looking. That’s when it counts the most.
