Luke 5:4 – Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
Have you ever felt led to do something you fear to do? Maybe you just think trying will be a waste of time or that others may think you foolish. In either case, inaction does not seem acceptable, but the actions available do not seem plausible. Cheer up. All Christians have felt this way at some point.
Jesus commanded Peter to take his boat out into the Sea of Galilee and let down his nets for a haul of fish. Peter said he had been out fishing all night with no success, but even though he questioned the judgement of the Lord, he still obeyed. Upon obeying the Master, he caught more than his ship alone could carry.
The lesson is clear for us. When prompted by God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, we should answer in the affirmative. Many people attempt to quench the Spirit to their own detriment. If we determine to go contrary to God, we have less success than a salmon swimming up stream, and like those salmon we will only encounter bears, exhaustion and death in the end.
Let us rather launch out into the deep and trust the Lord, the Captain of our souls. His guidance is unerring and true. If we trust Him thusly we will see a blessing that our vessel cannot contain.
