Life and Light – John 1:4-5

John 1:4-5 – In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

I woke up this morning.  Did you?  I suspect that if you are reading or hearing these words, then you are awake, alive and well.  Now if you understand these words, then there is a possibility that you are truly alive in spirit and not simply alive in the flesh.  In this case, you know Jesus, the Life and Light of the world.

It took me a while to grasp the fact that the earthly life we have now is merely a shadow of the life of Jesus Christ.  Because of sin, we are conceived and brought forth spiritually stillborn even though the heart beats and the lungs breathe, the soul is spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1).  I suspect that we could hardly compare what we think of as life with that experienced by Adam and Eve before sin entered in.  However, this is still not what is found in the person of Jesus Christ.

According to 1 Corinthians 15:45, “The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [Jesus Christ] was made a quickening spirit.”  More than just a man with breath in His lungs, Jesus was in control of His life like a light switch.  As the Lord said and later proved of His earthly life, “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again” (John 10:18a).  This power declared His divine nature.
Because the Savior has the ultimate power of life, He controls our destiny.  He is the Lord of life, and it is by His discretion that we live.  He is the judge of the quick [living] and the dead (2 Timothy 4:1).  Our lives are in His hands, and like Aaron’s rod that miraculously budded was placed in the Ark of the Covenant, “your life is hid with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

Pledge your life to Jesus!  Be the living sacrifice His grace allows today.  That is your best life.
