Romans 15:2 – Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
When we look at the life of Christ, it was characterized by service to others, God the Father first and then His people. He never put His bodily desires before others. Even in prayer to the Father, He asked for assistance for others and on their behalf. His ministry was one of edification and building up the broken hearted and downtrodden.
Many modern cultures elevate the desires of the individual above the community. Deep personal sacrifice for others is poorly rewarded or not recognized at all. Instead individual career advancement, affluence and leisure are lauded as the only real means of success even though none of these things have lasting value. By contrast, Jesus denied Himself and taught us about service, saying, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).
Thankfully, it is not too late to turn things around. Starting today you and I can renew our commitment to serving others. By example, we can lead a revolution of humble, grace-filled love for our neighbors and friends. By sharing this practical Gospel of Love, we show Christ with our hands and not just our mouths. Let your faith lead your work. It’s what Jesus would do.
