A House of Prayer – Mark 11:17

Mark 11:17 – And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Have you ever been angry?  I mean really angry?  Perhaps so.  Most of us have been furious about something at least once.  Such was the case with Jesus one day when he enter the Temple grounds and found men selling sacrifices and offerings at a profit, exchanging foreign currency to facilitate the transaction.  These men profited from the needs of those faithful souls that came to Jerusalem seeking redemption.  Jesus was furious.  Nothing should keep His people from prayer and worship.

After driving the money changers from the building, he taught the people saying,  “Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves” (Mark 11:17).  When profit comes before faithfulness, thievery has begun.  We cannot in good conscience benefit from the desperation of others.  It is not what we would have them do to us, and it is not what we should do to them.  The fact that this unchecked profiteering was happening in the Temple was an abomination.

It is rather easy to put earthly gain before the Lord, and this is why we are taught to seek His kingdom first.  One of the primary ways we can seek the kingdom is through prayer, and Jesus gave His life to pay the sacrificial price to give us access to the throne of grace where our prayers are heard (Hebrews 4:14-16).  Through grace we the faithful have unfettered access to God in prayer, and there is no further price of admission.  Jesus paid it all.

Is there something in your life today that is keeping you from the simple act of prayer?  Are there people telling you that you have to pray in a certain place or holding certain things?  That is not true.  Are their others hindering your time to pray or telling you that you are unworthy to pray?   Get them out of the way.  Jesus has made the sincere prayers of the faithful effective.  Worst of all, are there people telling you that you have to make donations or other sacrifices for your prayers to be heard?  Those are lies.  The debt is paid in full.

The only thing that hinders our prayers is unrepentant sin.  Repent and be saved.  Come into the house of prayer ignoring the neigh sayers.  Whip them if you must.  Do not let the world keep you from prayer.
