John 10:9 – I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
Meditation: Here Jesus gives the parable of the Good Shepherd comparing Himself not only to a shepherd but also the door of the sheep fold. As the shepherd, the Lord acts as caregiver and protector. As the very door of the sheep fold, He creates a place of sanctuary where He houses the sheep away from the dangers and darkness of the world. He does not merely describe the door or point the way to it. He is the door.
As we embark on this new year together, let us remember that the Good Shepherd is still acting as the door to the sheep fold. He is the means and way to fine sanctuary and comfort. When we look to Him for protection, He is always faithful and only our sins ruin that experience. We find rest only when we return to Him.
Call to Action: Today, draw a picture of a rectangle with a gap in one end. Draw a stick figure with a shepherd’s crook in his hand in the gap, and contemplate that the Good Shepherd stands at the door to welcome us back every day. Now put your picture on your refrigerator or wall so you see it every day and remember that He is the door.
