If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. – Luke 11:36
Meditation: Have you ever arisen in the night without turning on the lamp only to stumble for lack of light? I certainly have. Just the other night I stumbled down the stairs, because I failed to flip a switch at the top. I am still limping due to that poor decision.
As representatives of Jesus Christ, Christians are lights of Christ to others. As He said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14). The two implications in this verse are, (1) Christians provide illumination to the world insofar as they follow Christ, and (2) A light cannot be hidden for practical reasons; for a light to work, it must be exposed and within view.
What I fear is that we fail to understand that the source of that divine light is the Holy Spirit. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10). We are beneficiaries of God’s grace. He is the Father of lights (James 1:17).
Just as the other night when I failed to flip on the power to the light on the stairs, we often try to fumble forward without looking to the God for illumination. This is exactly what happens when we quench the Spirit. Ignoring the Word of God and the internal promptings of His Spirit, we set ourselves up for a fall. The light lit within us depends upon that eternal flame of God. Without it our light flickers and goes dark leaving shadows in our soul. No part dark should be our theme.
Call to Action: Tonight when it is dark outside, turn on all the lights in your home. Then one by one, turn them all off leaving you in the dark. At that moment when everything is completely dark, consider what your life would be like without the knowledge of God and His truth. Think about this the next time you try to go down the stairs in the dark. Only with no part dark will you avoid injury and sin. Trust me, your body and soul will thank you.
