Great Peace – Psalm 119:165

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. – Psalm 119:165

Meditation:  Are you disturbed by the world around you?  Is your heart troubled by sin?  If so, then let me point you to the solution: love of God’s law.

When I think of the law, I often think of police officers who are also called officers of the peace.  Why?  Because they maintain peace by enforcing the law.  Peace abides only when people bend their self-interest of the common good.

Today’s passage illustrates how critical law and order are to peacefulness.  In fact, love for God’s law, His Word, and His judgments is the only sure fire solution for sin.  If we love something, then we want to be close to it and imitate it.  Without love for God’s law, even forgiven sins do not fade way because we too often return to the sinful behaviors that entrap us.

In the case of the Christian, conformity to God’s law must be an implicit part of discipleship to Christ, the Prince of Peace.  The Savior said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).  As we follow Christ in obedience, we have a double portion of peace.  He gave us the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.  This Spirit of Peace is our great comforter in times of trouble.  This same Spirit enables us to seek aftee Christ’s teachings as the Word of God and we then have peace in obedience.
Call to Action:  Are you at peace today?  If so, thank Jesus Christ for this gift.  If not, is it because you have unrepentant sin?  Is it because you have a burden, a worry, that you have not given over to the Lord’s sovereign care?  In either case, take it to Jesus Christ.  He will give you peace.
