At the commandment of the Lord the children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the Lord they pitched: as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they rested in their tents. -Numbers 9:18
Meditation: Have ever felt directionless? It is a common feeling, and it can lead to frustration and confusion. Without guidance, this frustration leads to anger and great error. Where do we find guidance? The answer to that question will determine much of our joy and peace in this life.
If we attempt to look solely within ourselves for answers, we will eventually find that the limits of our knowledge and our capacity to understand are far exceeded by life’s challenges. If we look to earthly philosophers and scholars, we must finally realize that we are relying on someone with the same aptitude for error as ourselves. However, if we acknowledge that our help needs a perspective superior to that of mortal men, then we are on the right track.
As you can see from the passage above, As faithful and just as he was, Moses, needed guidance beyond that capacity of his peers. So too, the Israelites who followed him needed to understand that together they must follow God above all. Throughout history people have denied God and submitted to him over and over again. Denial and rebellion of God can always be tied to a failure to acknowledge His superiority and sovereignty. Conversely, submission to God will always provide peace and joy even in the face of persecution.
Self-motivation and earthly teachers from parents to professors have their place, but in the end, God and His Word must guide us. When He says move, we move. When He says wait, we wait.
Call To Action: Examine your motivations. Are you driven by tradition or social pressures? Are you guided by economics and pragmatic necessities and wants? Do you believe that your success is tied to your prowess or attractiveness? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may need to reevaluate your priorities. These are worldly philosophies, and if followed to their extreme, they will leave you lost and miserable.
Choose rather to acknowledge God, His power and His sovereignty over your life. Submit to Him and find yourself serving the Lord. He has given us Jesus Christ to guide us by His Spirit and His Word. God forbid that you deny Him. He alone is the way, the truth and the life.
