And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. – 1 John 5:14-15
Meditation: Who is listening when you pray? It is a good question. The Apostle John is confident that the prayers of the faithful are attended by God. He listens to those prayers that align with His will and plan for our lives. Therefore, those prayers are positively affirmed and the petitions are granted when we ask according to His will.
Let that sink in. If we ask for anything, no matter how impossible according to human reasoning, and it agrees with God’s desires, it will be granted. Jesus put it this way, “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it” (John 14:14). That is amazing!
Now before you go away thinking you need to start praying for a Ferrari and a new job, I need to emphasize the context. Obedience and humility are key to the Christian life, and our Heavenly Father desires the best for His children. Just as a human father knows, sometimes the best is not what we want but what we need. “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13)
Call To Action: Read James 4:1-3. What does James have to say about the interference of sin with prayer? Examine your prayers and consider whose will you desire. Is it yours of God’s?
