Choose Life – Deuteronomy 30:19

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live – Deuteronomy 30:19

Meditation:  Every day is filled with choices.  Thanks be to God that He did not leave it up to us to choose our destiny (Ephesians 1:3-6).  However, we know from experience that being called by God does not make one a robot.  God’s calling is ultimately inescapable, but this does not mean that we simply jump on board with Christ once we come to know Him.  Instead we choose life or death every day, life in fellowship with the Lord or death without Him until we are made perfect in Paradise.

Today’s ancient Scripture was spoken by Moses to the Israelites some sometime in the 16th century BC near the end of a long life in service to the Lord.  Moses knew that life consisted not in the things we own or even our personal accomplishments (Luke 12:15).   Rather, life in its truest sense is inextricably tied to a relationship with God.  Knowing God and His Son equals life eternal (John 17:3).

Moses wanted the people to realize what all if the Patriarchs understood.  The Lord God had said to Abram, “Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward” (Genesis 15:1).  God’s presence, His Person, is the reward of faith.  If you have God, then you need nothing else, because He is the source of all blessings.  He is life.

Call To Action:  Choose life and blessing.  Choose Jesus Christ.  Choose service in His name and His Glory.  Turn from death.  Turn from sin and cursing.  Turn from the temptations of this present world and the Adversary (1 Peter 5:8-9).
