Ecclesiastes 1:10 – Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Today is January 1st, New Year’s Day. Around the globe people are setting new goals to improve themselves or either they are renewing old vows in like manner. Many of these same individuals will fail to keep these resolutions, start over next year. There is truly nothing new under the sun.
My young son said of 2019, “We will do it all over again.” What an insight from a nine year old! Whether we follow the Roman calendar or the Chinese calendar or another, the cycle of seasons has endured upon Earth since God set the moon and stars in the sky. So indeed we do it over and over again.
What can we learn from this phenomenon? Many things come to mind, but mainly I believe we see God’s sovereignty in the seasons, the changing of the moon, and seemingly endless cycles of renewal. God set the seasons and such in place as the Creator. These things teach us that despite the outcome of last time, today is a new day.
New days and new years represent opportunities. Yes, we may stumble. We may fail. In fact sin is a certainty, but Christ has defeated sin and death. The Christian need not fear death. We should look forward to another opportunity to follow Christ today, this week, this month, the year.
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say rejoice! Something does not have to be new to be good.
