Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? – Job 6:6
I think most Christians would agree that we live in challenging, even dark times. Violence and strife are on the rise. Division and depression are growing problems. And the Church is suffering from apathy and false teaching. Either tasteless or vile, it is certainly unpalatable.
One reaction is to throw our hands in air and give up. Another is to hide away until the trouble passes. Yet another is to grow angry and bitter. Jesus’s reaction was to face the troubles with salt and light: Salt to purify and make palatable and Light to reveal and comfort.
All people live in a tedious and tasteless world without God. Jesus came to show us and bring us the solution, the salvation, needed in our time and for all time. He was the Light of the world when He was here, and He has given that duty to us now. The Light of the Truth is needed and that light needs salt. Otherwise, we are asking the world to eat unseasoned egg whites, tasteless, colorless and unpleasant.
Sisters and brothers, “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” (Colossians 5:5-6). Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
