And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. – Revelation 21:23
There are many parallels between light and God the Father and Jesus Christ throughout the Bible. Additionally, God’s Word is often compared to physical sources of light like lamps or candlesticks. In the Revelation, the Apostle John describes the city of God as without sun and moon, because “the Lamb is the light thereof.”
Whether it is light or some other guiding force, we trust our senses to inform our choices and determine up from down. If the Lamb, Jesus Christ, is the Light in the City of God, the Kingdom of Heaven, He is the guiding force for the people as the sun is for the material world. As we seek the Kingdom of Heaven, we must seek Jesus and look to Him for warmth and guidance. The Lamb is our Savior and Redeemer. His will should be our first priority and our first love.
If we trust in Jesus we have no need of other lesser lights. He gives us all we need. In fact, as we become disciples of Jesus and we take on His character, we also shine with that heavenly light of God. This is how we lead in the darkness. Shine on Jesus! Shine on O Lamb of God! Lead us through the night! Lead us on to victory!
